תקציר הפרק הקודם: גדי מתיידד עם המטופלים במרפאה. הוא פוגש בנציגים ממדינות ערב ומתוודע לצד האפל של ה"בקשיש הרפואי".

 

יותר מעשרה ימים של תרגולי בסיס עברו עליי במחיצתו של מאו סיפו. עברנו על מבחר גדול של חבטות והטלות, מכים באוויר ובשקים במלוא המרץ ומתרגלים טכניקות קרב אחד עם השני. התמקדנו בהבטים הטכניים של התנועות ובמיקסום העוצמה באמצעות החיבור למרכז . מאו סיפו נראה שבע רצון מהשגי אך נמנע מלספק את תשוקתי העזה לחוש את חדוות הזירה.

"סבלנות," הוא אמר. "עבודת הידיים שלך טובה אבל תנועת הרגליים חסרה חדות. אל תדאג, אני אודיע לך כשתהיה מוכן."

ימים ספורים לאחר השיחה הגעתי לאימון והופתעתי למצוא את אחד המדריכים הצעירים, יאו סיפו, עומד על המזרן.

"מה שלומך?" חייכתי וקדתי לעברו. הוא הנהן והסיט עיניו ממני. יאו היה בחור גבה קומה וחסון כבן שבע עשרה שהצטיין בתרגילי הוו'שו האומנותי. חזיתי בו בפעולה מספר פעמים והתרשמתי מאוד מרמת הדיוק והחדות שהדגים. כשרונו הבולט של יאו סיפו גם הפך אותו לאחראי על חינוך ואימון קבוצת הילדים הצעירה.


תהיתי מה הוא עושה במקום. האם הוא מחליף את מאו סיפו, או אולי מצטרף לאימון?

"היכן מאו סיפו?" שאלתי. שום תגובה. כנראה שיאו לא דיבר אנגלית.

יאו הביט בי מזווית עינו, מזהה את הבעת העונג על פני ונושף בביטול, סנטרו זקור וגבו מתוח, ידיו מתרוממות כהכנה לתנועה הבאה. קול מחיאות כפיים נשמע מהפתח ויאו קפא על מקומו. מאו סיפו נכנס לאולם, חיוך ערמומי מרוח על פניו, שיניו טוחנות ראש של שום.

"מצויין!" הוא קרא. "אתה רואה, גדי, זה מה שאני קורא חיבור למרכז."

אז מה המשחק שלך, סיפו? איזו מזימה אתה רוקח לך שם בממלכת השום?

לאחר החימום, הצעיד אותנו מאו לעבר מערום הציוד שבקצה המזרן. הוא ציווה עלינו לחבוש כפפות המיועדות לתרגול חבטות בשקים. מצאנו את מקומנו, כל אחד מול שק והתחלנו לעבוד, מכים עם הידיים והרגליים לפי הנחיותיו של מאו. מזווית עיני זיהיתי כי יאו, למרות גמישותו ועוצמת בעיטותיו, לא עלה עליי בזריזותו ועוצמתו בכל הקשור לחבטות הידיים.

בזינוק מהיר ובלתי צפוי, סגר יאו את הטווח ביננו, ידיו שולחות שלושה אגרופים זריזים בכיוון ראשי. חמקתי משניים מהם, השלישי משפשף את מצחי.

"תגיב, גדי," מאו קרא מהצד. "אל תישאר חייב."

הנהנתי והכיתי שני אגרופים לעבר יאו, מכות איטיות ומשוללות עוצמה. יאו התחמק ללא מאמץ ופתח במתקפת נגד. הפעם שני אגרופים שמילאו את יעודם, האחד הולם בצד ראשי והשני מוצא את אפי. דמעות מילאו את עיניי ואפי האדים.

"שישים אחוז," מאו הזכיר לנו.

"לא יכולתי להתאפק," יאו התנצל. "האף שלך גדול ומפתה."

מאו סיפו פרץ בצחוק מתגלגל ויאו זקר את סנטרו בחיוך. התנשמתי בכבדות, הכעס הולך והופך לזעם יצרי,פראי ובלתי נשלט מטבעו.

אל תשחק לידיים שלו, הזכרתי לעצמי בקול פנימי שהלך ואיבד את הנחישות והעוצמה ההכרחיות לסמכותו. ניזקקתי לכל כוח רצוני בכדי להימנע מליפול למלכודת של מאו.

שמור על קור רוח. אל תתפתה…

עוד מתקפה מתפרצת, עוד אגרופים מונחתים ושוב החיוך המתנשא.

"קדימה," יאו התגרה. "תפסיק לפחד."

לפחד? בהיתי בו בחוסר אמון, ובאחת, חומת השליטה העצמית התמוססה בפני להבות האלימות שעלו בשאגה מבפנים.

אין בעיה. בוא נראה מה אתה באמת שווה.

שוב לא היה לי אכפת שאני כלי שרת בידיו של מאו. רצוני הפך לממוקד: לחבוט בראשו של יאו ולו רק פעם אחת, להטביע את אגרופי עמוק בתוך חיוכו המתנשא.

מאו רוצה שתחטוף, הנהנתי לעצמי. ועכשיו גם אני…

כשיאו יצא למתקפה הבאה זינקתי מקו המרכז והיכתי שני אגרופים מדוייקים אל מרכז ראשו. האגרוף הראשון גרם ליאו להסיט את עיניו ממני, משאיר את ראשו חשוף לאגרוף השני, מכת מגל רחבה שמצאה את פרצופו. חשתי בכפפה שוקעת פנימה, מוחצת את שפתיו ופוגשת בשיניו.

יאו נראה המום,מראה ששיקף את תחושתי. הופתעתי מהקלות בה מצאתי את מטרתי ובעיקר מהעובדה שהסיט את עיניו כטירון.

הפתעתי אותו, חשבתי, והידקתי את סנטרי לכתף. עכשיו זה כבר לא יהיה כל כך קל.

מאו נבח על יאו שהתעשת וחזר לקפץ, ידיו כבר לא שמוטות, שפתו התחתונה נפוחה. הוא תקף ואני התחמקתי, שולח אגרוף עם היד הקדמית תוך כדי נסיגה, יאו מסיט ראשו מהמכה. חבטתי בו מספר פעמים נוספות ונראה שכל מכה שמצאה את מטרתה ערערה את בטחונו העצמי.

מאו שאג בסינית ויאו הסתער, מטיח בי שלושה אגרופים שנחסמו, הרביעי פוגש בלחיי. תקפתי חזרה, שני אגרופים לכיוון הראש, יאו עוצם עיניים וסוגר ידיים לסוכך על ראשו, חושף את הבטן וחוטף אגרוף שלישי לצלעות. הוא צנח כשהוא אוחז בבטנו, מביט בי בעיניים דומעות וקרועות לרווחה. לפתע הוא נראה כנער חלוש ומפוחד, לא עוד המדריך הגאה שהסתובב בבית הספר כטווס.

למראה עליבותו נשרה ממני רוח הקרב. חשתי צביטה בלב והבטתי במאו סיפו בעיניים יוקדות.

מאו נאנח והחליף כמה מילים עם יאו. יאו הנהן ויצא מהחדר.

"מצויין," מאו אמר כשיאו נעלם. הוא טפח על שכמי, חיוך זורח על פניו.

"מה כול כך מצויין?" קצפתי. "אני לא משלם לך בשביל שתשתמש בי ככלי לחינוך."

"אתה משלם לי בשביל אימון ואימון אתה מקבל, מה אכפת לך אם על הדרך אני גם מחנך?"

עזבתי את האימון כשאני משוכנע כי לעולם לא אשוב. הרגשתי נבגד, מרומה ובעיקר כעסתי על מאו סיפו ועל הדרך בה נהג בי וביאו.

כמה ערבים מאוחר יותר הנושא עלה כשנפגשנו עם בראד וחבורתו לארוחת ערב במסעדה שבקרבת הקולג'.
